Process Paper

The
first of the three Reichs was the Holy Roman Reich, which was created
in 800 A.D. In 1806, Napoleon’s armies destroyed it, and years
later, the Second Reich was formed. Then in 1933, the Third Reich was
created. The Third Reich came to power because the German people
needed someone to blame for the loss of the First World War. Hitler
spoke up and said that they did not lose the war, but that they were
stabbed in the back by the Jews and other traitors. Hitler was
elected Chancellor in 1933 and started the Third Reich, hoping that
it would last a thousand years. It ended in 1945, when Hitler
committed suicide in his bunker under Berlin.
I chose my topic because I read a lot about the Nazi Regime and wanted to learn more about how they rose to power. I also chose my topic because I wished to add more knowledge to my already vast understandings of WWII. Since I have prior knowledge on this topic, I felt that I would be able to understand more of my research and be able to insert more information into my presentation as well as locate primary sources easily.
I conducted my research by first visiting the Pennsylvania State Library and checking out secondary resources that provided important background information. An English translated version of Mein Kampf was located at the Dauphin County Library. I also got a biography of Hitler and The Third Reich Day by Day at my school's library. The internet was a valuable tool for locating a time line, pictures, and primary and secondary sources.
I traveled to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. and conducted two interviews. One, Mr. Herman Taube, a 95 year old that was a Polish soldier in WWII, was captured and forced to work. Another, Mr. Ernie Weiss who is an 81 year old Jewish man, was born in Austria. He had to flee 7 different countries including Austria and Cuba. I also went up to Syracuse, New York and interviewed my great uncle Douglas Bunston. He was an American Air Force Engineer and was on a plane when it flew over Frankfurt. He saw the place where Nazi Party Day was celebrated. An interview with Gisela McBride from Carlisle, P.A., provided information about growing up in Germany and her experience during the American carpet bombing and Russian control.
For my presentation category, I chose to do a website because it allows the viewer interact more with the information through the use of multimedia. Creating a website also allows me to express my creativity a little differently than by doing a paper or exhibit.
Early in the Twentieth Century, WWI had destroyed Europe. Hitler, a corporal in the Wehrmacht, or German army, rose to power in the Nazi Party after the end of WWI in 1918. The Nazi Party, a political party in Germany started in 1920, rose to power in 1921 when Hitler became more powerful in the Nazi Party. The Nazi Party took over Germany when Hitler became Chancellor in 1933. My topic relates to the theme, Revolution, Reaction, Reform in history, because the takeover of Germany by the Nazi Party contributed to the start of WWII and Hitler’s invasion of Poland. This revolution caused the rest of the world to react by declaring war on Germany or joining forces with them. The end of WWII caused a reform with the building of the Berlin Wall, which divided the Communist East Berlin from the Democratic West Berlin.
