Q: When Germany invaded Poland, what was your reaction?
A: When Germany invaded Poland, the British government declared war on Germany. While I was on a three day pass, we flew over Frankfurt. Frankfurt was a station and all of the downtown section of Frankfurt was smashed. There wasn't a roof left on any of the buildings.

Q: Do you remember what happened when you left to go to Cuba?
A: I remember when I was in first grade in Vienna, it was 8 o'clock in the morning when the school bell was about to ring, the teacher came into the classroom, we sprung to attention like soldiers, It was a boy's school and the teacher faced us, she raised her right arm, and she said "Heil Hitler". We did exactly the same thing, we raised our right arm and we yelled "Heil Hitler".

Q: When Hitler came to power, did you support Him?
A: I was 7 years old and my mother was a Social Democrat, my grandparents wanted the Royalty back, and everyone else was not really in favor of him. There were many different parties. There were not only two parties like here. There were quite a number of small parties and the minute he came into power, the next meeting of the Reichstag was in March. the S.A. and S.S. were outside and they intimidated all of the members of Parliament that were from different parties and not Nazis.
